Hello again! This will be my second article of the week, and I'm so happy that I finally have some free time to dedicate to my blog! In this new article I will introduce my second favorite Finnish band, which I've been actively following since 2009. Its name is Apocalyptica. Apocalyptica is a Finnish symphonic metal band from Helsinki, formed in 1993. The band is composed of three classically trained cellists Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, and Perttu Kivilaakso and the jazz drummer Mikko Sirén. Originally they started their career as a classical-style Metallica tribute band, by releasing the debut studio album Plays Metallica by four cellos.
The band eventually adopted a neoclassical metal style without the use of conventional guitars and bass and released many other albums, by collaborating with many famous rock stars.
Last week, on Friday 26/11 I had the pleasure to see them for the fifth time live, but this time in a super magical place: Johanneksenkirkko, my favorite church in Helsinki. This year the band had to cancel all their tour dates abroad because of the pandemic and since there wasn't much else to do, they got the brilliant idea to plan a tour all over Finland called Matka Mieleen, Kaamoksen Sellot kirkkokiertue (Journey into the mind, cellos of the darkness church tour). The tour started in Lappeenranta on the 15/11 and ended in Hämeenlinna on the 2/12. When I heard this news, I was so happy about the fact that I would have had the chance to see them again live and so I bought my ticket. I have always longed for seeing one of their gigs in a venue like a church, and my dream actually came true.
That Friday night I arrived around 6:30 pm at Johanneksenkirkko, and the church was almost full. Luckily I found a good spot on the balcony and after I took my seat, people kept coming and I thought that the gig probably went sold out. I could feel and see the people's excitement through their eyes and their behaviors. I was pretty excited too, since I haven't seen a proper gig in a very long time because of the pandemic. And when the lights went down, people started screaming and yes, there they were, Apocalyptica in person. When they started playing the first notes of Deathzone I instantly got goosebumps and started crying a little bit. Being there felt amazing, I couldn't believe my ears and my eyes while listening to their music and being surrounded by all that art beauty. The crowd was also in complete silence and strictly attentive during the performances, but the moment the band stopped playing, everyone clapped more than enthusiastically urging them to play again. The gig was completely instrumental and all the songs have also been re-arranged to perfectly fit the church environment. They played their most famous pieces like Kaamos, Bittersweet, Coma, Farewell and Nothing else matters, and some of their newest pieces from Cell-0, their last album.

In questo nuovo articolo vi parlerò della mia seconda band finlandese preferita, che seguo attivamente dal 2009. Loro sono gli Apocalyptica. Gli Apocalyptica sono una band symphonic metal finlandese formatasi nel 1993 a Helsinki. La band è composta da tre violoncellisti di formazione classica Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen e Perttu Kivilaakso e dal batterista jazz Mikko Sirén. Agli esordi iniziarono la loro carriera come band tributo ai Metallica in stile classico, pubblicando l'album di debutto Plays Metallica by Four Cellos. La band alla fine adottò uno stile metal neoclassico senza l'uso di chitarre e basso convenzionali e pubblicò molti altri album, collaborando con molte rockstar famose.
La scorsa settimana, venerdì 26/11 ho avuto il piacere di vederli per la quinta volta dal vivo, ma questa volta in un luogo super magico: Johanneksenkirkko, la mia chiesa preferita di Helsinki. Quest'anno la band ha dovuto cancellare tutte le date del loro tour all'estero per via della pandemia e poiché non c'era molto altro da fare, hanno avuto la brillante idea di organizzare un tour in tutta la Finlandia chiamato Matka Mieleen, Kaamoksen Sellot kirkkokiertue (letteralmente: Viaggio nella mente, Violoncelli dell'Oscurità, tour delle chiese). Il tour è iniziato a Lappeenranta il 15/11 e si è concluso a Hämeenlinna il 2/12. Appena ho sentito questa notizia, ero così felice del fatto che avrei avuto la possibilità di rivederli dal vivo che ho comprato il biglietto. Ho sempre desiderato vedere uno dei loro concerti in un posto come una chiesa gotica, e il mio sogno si è avverato.
Quel venerdì sera sono arrivata intorno alle 18:30 presso la Johanneksenkirkko, e la chiesa era quasi piena. Per fortuna ho trovato un bel posto a sedere sul balcone. Una volta sedutami, la gente continuava ad arrivare e ho pensato che il concerto fosse andato probabilmente sold out. Riuscivo sentire e vedere l'eccitazione della gente attraverso i loro occhi. Anch'io ero piuttosto emozionata, dal momento che non vedevo un concerto vero e proprio da tanto tempo a causa della pandemia. E quando le luci si sono spente, la gente ha iniziato a urlare e sì, perché gli Apocalyptica in persona hanno fatto il loro ingresso sul palco e, quando hanno iniziato a suonare le prime note di Deathzone, mi è venuta la pelle d'oca e mi è uscita anche qualche lacrimuccia per l'emozione. Essere lì era un'emozione fantastica. Non riuscivo a credere alle mie orecchie e ai miei occhi mentre ascoltavo la loro musica ed ero circondata da cotanta bellezza in quella chiesa. Anche la folla era in completo silenzio e rigorosamente attenta quando la band eseguiva i loro pezzi, ma nel momento in cui smetteva di suonare, tutti applaudivano più che entusiasti incitandoli a suonare ancora.
Il concerto è stato completamente strumentale e anche tutte le canzoni sono state riarrangiate per adattarsi perfettamente al luogo sacro. La band ha suonato alcuni dei loro pezzi più famosi come Kaamos, Bittersweet, Coma, Farewell e Nothing else matter, e alcuni dei loro brani più recenti provenienti dal loro ultimo album Cell-0.
