Hello guys! Guess where I'm writing from? Italy! I finally came back here to spend my Christmas holidays with my family, I missed them so much and I didn't feel like celebrating it without them this year. Since I have some free time, I decided to write some articles also from here, Finland is always in my mind.
Today I would like to talk about my last adventure in Porvoo. Porvoo is one of the most touristy towns in Finland and its most important spots are: the old town known for its well-preserved 18th- and 19th-century buildings, the 15th-century Porvoo Cathedral, the series of red barns by the river Porvoonjoki and much more. The Old Town and the Porvoonjoki River Valley are recognized as, together, one of the National landscapes of Finland.
Porvoo is worth a visit in any season, but I would say that the most magical one is winter, in particular during Christmas time. And indeed I've always wished to visit Porvoo in December, and this year I finally made it and all I can say is that it was really worth it, also because this time the city was covered in snow.
On Saturday 4th of December me and friends Helena and Maija decided to go there by taking Onnibus. We departed from kamppi bus station around 12pm and the bus trip lasted about 50 minutes. Once we arrived, we went straight away towards the old town, where we managed to visit some shops and take pictures of all the beautiful Christmassy window shops. But our first stop was at the famous Bromberg chocolate shop, which was packed of people busy buying chocolate boxes for Christmas.
After Bromberg we went to see one of the most famous spots of the town: the bridge Uusi silta, from where you can admire the wonderful series of red cabins by the Porvoonjoki river. Here are some pics. The view was even more breathtaking with the frozen river and everything covered in snow.
Afterwards we were feeling so cold that we decided to stop by the historical tea house and cafeteria Cafe Helmi. The atmosphere inside was cozy but fancy at the same time for its wonderful interiors with pastel wallpapers and several chandeliers. Me and the girls took some tea served in a lovely tea pot and a piece of cake, and then we took a seat in the room at the back at a table by the window. In the background songs from the 20s/30s were playing, which made the atmosphere even more genuine. If you happen to visit Porvoo, please stop by this cafeteria, it's very highly recommended, you'll feel like an aristocrat from the past while sitting there and drinking some tea.
After Cafe helmi we planned to visit the Porvoo Cathedral, which unfortunately was already closed. Luckily tho we had the chance to take some pictures from the outside when the sun was setting. Anyways if you want to visit it, always check the opening hours: it's usually open from 10am to 2pm.
After the church we visited some other shops, to warm up a little bit, since it was still freezing outside and started snowing all of a sudden. Around 4pm it was already getting dark so we planned to visit the Christmas market located in the Main square of the city. The atmosphere there was the right one, everything looks festive and Christmassy, and although the market was a tiny one, it was worth the visit. Outside the Christmas market there was a vary colorful old style carousel and here's the pictures.
In order to end our day trip properly, since we were feeling really hungry, we stopped by Rafael's Steak house & Bistro where we had very massive and tasty burgers.
I really hope you'll have the time to visit Porvoo during Christmas time, it's really worth it, and I also think that the Christmas market will be opened til the 22nd of December, as any other Christmas markets in Finland. If you to find out more info about Porvoo visit its official website.
Important tips:
- I suggest you to visit Porvoo either on a Saturday or on any other weekdays, except for Sunday, day where most of the restaurants and cafeterias are closed.
-Don't forget to wear a mask and to bring the COVID pass with you.
-In Porvoo there are also interesting museums like the Porvoo Museo, the doll and toy museum and the Runeberg home museum. I never visited them unfortunately, but I read several good reviews. I really hope to visit at least one of them next time 🙂
-Last but not least take a walk til the Iso Linnamäki, the Valley from where you can see the old town in all its splendour, but also an area where you can enjoy the Finnish nature and its wonderful landscapes.
Porvoo natalizia
Ciao ragazzi! Indovinate da dove vi sto scrivendo? Dall'Italia! Finalmente sono tornata qui per trascorrere le vacanze di Natale con la mia famiglia, che mi mancava tantissimo e quest'anno non me la sentivo di festeggiare senza di loro. Visto che ho un po' di tempo libero, ho deciso di scrivere degli articoli anche da qui, perché dopotutto la Finlandia è sempre nel mio cuore.
Oggi vorrei raccontarvi della mia ultima avventura a Porvoo. Porvoo è una delle città più turistiche della Finlandia e i suoi luoghi più importanti sono: il centro storico noto per i suoi edifici ben conservati risalenti al XVIII e XIX secolo, la cattedrale di Porvoo del XV secolo, la serie di fienili rossi lungo il fiume Porvoonjoki, e molti altri ancora. Sia il centro storico che la valle del fiume Porvoonjoki sono riconosciuti come i paesaggi nazionali della Finlandia.
Vale sempre la pena visitare Porvoo in qualsiasi stagione, ma direi che il periodo invernale è quello più magico, in particolare sotto natale.E infatti ho sempre voluto visitare Porvoo a dicembre, e quest'anno finalmente ce l'ho fatta e posso solo dire che ne è valsa davvero la pena, anche perché questa volta la città era interamente ricoperta di neve.
Sabato 4 dicembre io e le mie amiche Helena e Maija abbiamo deciso di andarci prendendo l'Onnibus. Siamo partite dalla stazione degli autobus di Kamppi intorno alle 12:00 e il viaggio in autobus è durato circa 50 minuti. Una volta arrivate, ci siamo dirette subito verso il centro storico, dove siamo riuscite a visitare sia alcuni negozi e a fotografare tutte le bellissime vetrine natalizie. Ma la nostra prima tappa è stata la famosa cioccolateria Bromberg, piena di gente intenta a comprare scatole di cioccolatini per Natale.
Dopo Bromberg siamo andate a vedere uno dei luoghi più famosi della cittadina: il ponte Uusi silta, da dove si può ammirare la meravigliosa serie di fienili rossi lungo il fiume Porvoonjoki. La vista era ancora più mozzafiato con il fiume ghiacciato e tutto ricoperto di neve.
Successivamente eravamo così infreddolite che abbiamo deciso di fermarci alla storica tea room e caffetteria Cafe Helmi. L'atmosfera all'interno era accogliente ma allo stesso tempo elegante per i suoi meravigliosi interni con carte da parati color pastello e diversi lampadari di cristallo. Io e le ragazze abbiamo preso del tè servito in una deliziosa teiera e una fetta di torta, e poi ci siamo seduti nella stanza in fondo a un tavolo vicino alla finestra. A rendere l'atmosfera ancora più aristocratica e genuina c'era la musica anni '20/'30 di sottofondo, proprio adatta a quel posto.Se vi capita di visitare Porvoo, fermatevi in questa caffetteria, è altamente consigliata, e vi sentirete come degli aristocratici del passato sedendo lì e sorseggiando del tè.
Dopo Cafe Helmi abbiamo programmato di visitare la Cattedrale di Porvoo, che purtroppo era già chiusa. Fortunatamente abbiamo avuto la possibilità di scattare alcune foto dall'esterno quando il sole stava già tramontando. Qualora voleste visitarla, controllate sempre gli orari di apertura: di solito è aperta dalle 10.00 alle 14.00.
Dopo la chiesa abbiamo visitato altri negozi, per scaldarci un po', visto che fuori faceva ancora freddo e all'improvviso ha iniziato anche a nevicare. Verso le 16 si stava già facendo buio, quindi abbiamo programmato di visitare il mercatino di Natale situato nella piazza principale della città. L'atmosfera era quella giusta, tutto sembra festoso e natalizio, e anche se il mercato era piccolino, ne valeva la pena dare un'occhiata. Fuori dal mercatino di Natale c'era una giostra variopinta vecchio stile ed ecco le foto.
Per concludere in bellezza la nostra gita, poiché avevamo davvero fame ci siamo rifugiate presso il Rafael's Steak house & Bistro dove abbiamo mangiato hamburger molto massicci e gustosi.
Spero davvero che avrete modo di visitare Porvoo durante il periodo natalizio, ne vale davvero la pena, e penso anche che il mercatino di Natale sarà aperto fino al 22 dicembre, come tutti gli altri mercatini natalizi in Finlandia. Per ulteriori informazioni su Porvoo visitate il sito ufficiale.
Suggerimenti importanti:
- Vi consiglio di visitare Porvoo di sabato o in qualsiasi altro giorno della settimana, tranne la domenica, giorno in cui la maggior parte dei ristoranti e delle caffetterie sono chiusi.
-Non dimenticate di indossare la mascherina e di portare sempre con voi il green pass.
-A Porvoo ci sono anche musei interessanti come il Museo di Porvoo, il museo delle bambole e dei giocattoli e la casa museo di Runeberg. Purtroppo non li ho mai visitati, ma ho letto diverse recensioni positive. Spero davvero di visitare almeno uno di questi la prossima volta 🙂
-L’ultima cosa, ma non meno importante: fate una passeggiata allungandovi fino all'Iso Linnamäki, la valle da cui potrete vedere il centro storico in tutto il suo splendore, ma anche un'area dove potete godervi la quiete della natura finlandese con i suoi meravigliosi paesaggi.
