Hello folks! This is my very first official article here, so you better wish me luck :P How did you all spend your Saint Valentine's Day yesterday? With your sweet half? I'm asking this question because if it's not clear enough from the title, I will spend some words on how Valentine's Day is usually celebrated in Finland.
First of all here Saint Valentine's day is not the lovers's day, but the friends's day.
Ystävä= friend + Päivä= day
Apparently in Finland they started celebrating this day unofficially during the '80s. Just some time later, precisely in 1987, the Ystävänpäivä was officially added on calendars at the suggestion of the Suomen Punainen Risti (Finnish Red Cross).
On this day friends would see each other to spend some time together. They would drink some coffe in a nice cafeteria or have lunch in a cool restaurant where they exchange cards with short poems about friendship, like this in the picture.
Sometimes they would even exchange a bouquet of flowers too, but the ystävänpäiväkortti is a must I would say.
So if you are one of those people who hates Saint Valentine's day because of the lack of a partner or because you just think that is a stupid marketing-driven holiday, then Finland would be the perfect place to be for you :P
Anyways this year I haven't really celebrated this date in the Finnish way if I have to be honest, but I spent it with my sweet half. We had lunch in this very cute wooden cafeteria in Vuosaari. The cafeteria is called Kahvila Kampela and is by the sea. On the menu you will find many Finnish specialities like the lohikeitto (salmon soup) and a wide range of Finnish delicacies, such as pies and pastries either savory or sweet. Yesterday we took the lohikeitto served with some ruisleipä (rye bread) and butter and for dessert coffee and pannukakku (called also pannari in the spoken finnish. It's a very thick pancake with strawberry jam and whipped cream). At the very end of this page you'll find the pictures from yesterday :)

È l'Ystävänpäivä, non San Valentino!
Ciao gente! Questo è il mio primo vero e proprio articolo qui, quindi sarebbe il caso che voi mi facciate un bell' in bocca al lupo. Come avete passato il giorno di San Valentino quest'anno? Con la vostra dolce metà? Vi faccio questa domanda perché non so se è già abbastanza chiaro dal titolo, ma vorrei parlarvi un po' di come viene passato San Valentino in Finlandia.
Prima di tutto qui San Valentino non è la festa degli innamorati ma degli amici.
Ystävä= amico + päivä= giornata
A quanto pare in Finlandia si è cominciato a festeggiare questa giornata negli anni '80. Poi più tardi, precisamente nel 1987, la festa degli amici è stata aggiunta sul calendario su suggerimento della Suomen Punainen Risti (Croce Rossa Finlandese).
In questa giornata gli amici si incontrano per passare del tempo insieme, sorseggiando del caffè in una bella caffetteria o andando a mangiare in qualche ristorante del centro, dove si scambiano biglietti con delle brevi poesie sull'amicizia o a volte anche dei mazzi di fiori. Ma devo ammettere che la ystävänpäiväkortti, vale a dire il biglietto, è un must.
Quindi se siete quel tipo di persone che odiano San Valentino o perché non si avete con chi trascorrerlo o perché è una festa ormai consumistica, forse la Finlandia sarebbe il posto giusto per voi. :P
Quest'anno non ho festeggiato questa giornata alla maniera finlandese ad essere sincera, ma con la mia dolce metà. Siamo andati a pranzo in una caffetteria in una casetta di legno nella zona di Vuosaari. Questo posto si chiama Kahvila Kampela e si trova in riva al mare. Nel menù potrete trovare tante buone specialità finlandesi come la lohikeitto (la zuppa di salmone) e una vasta di gamma di dolci e torte salate. Ieri abbiamo mangiato la lohikeitto accompagnata dal ruisleipä (pane di segale) e del burro. Poi per dessert abbiamo preso del caffè con un pannukakku (conosciuto anche come pannari nella lingua parlata, che non sarebbe altro che un pancake molto alto servito con della marmellata di fragole e panna montata).
