Dear readers, how are you doing? I'm here again ready to write a new article about my last visit to a magical place in the middle of the woods that my boyfriend made me discover some time ago... I'm referring to Maunulan Maja. Maunulan Maja is located in the heart of Keskuspuisto, precisely in Metsäläntie 9 and this is how it looks like.
As you can see it is a very big house entirely made of wood and painted in red, like a proper Finnish mökki (cottage) in the middle of the forest. And you immediately feel like you were thrown into a fairytale. Joggers, skiers, nordic walkers usually go there after a long walk to enjoy kahvi ja pulla (coffee and a pastry) as the Finnish tradition wants, but you can always find some other savory specialities. :P
This place is undoubtedly a hidden treasure that worths a visit once in a while, but I would honestly suggest to visit it in these weird times, since we are still in lockdown and you know why? As you already know all the restaurants and cafes are closed at the moment or they just sell take-away food, but in Maunulan Maja's case, you still have the possibility to sit at the tables outdoors, right in front of the big red cottage to enjoy your meal while you're surrounded by trees and you actually breathe some fresh air. Maunulan Maja is one of those very traditional and old style Finnish cafeterias that I'm love with and I'm always happy to visit it to taste some freshly baked pastries with some coffee or hot chocolate. Last Saturday the place wasn't that busy luckily and me and my boyfriend had two coffees with two tasty specialities: one savory and one sweet.
The savory speciality was the Vorschmack piirakka. I have never tried it before but I have to admit that that savory pastry was delicious. Usually in supermarkets you'll find the normal lihapiirakka, which is a fried pastry filled with minced meat and rice, but this time we found a special variation of this pastry called Vorschmack piirakka, that looks really similar to Lanttusupikka, another Karelian pastry filled with rutabaga. The Vorschmack was Marshal Mannerheim's favorite food and is originally from Eastern Europe countries and can be found in different variations. The Finnish recipe includes minced meat, anchovies or herring and onions.
The sweet speciality we chose was a special version rahkapulla with blueberry jam. If you're already a usual reader of this blog you might remember that in a previous article I already mentioned the world pulla (if not, check it out). But in order to refresh your memory in short pulla is that kind of sweet bread flavored with cardamom and you can find a wide range of pulla both in supermarkets, cafeterias and bakeries. The rahkapulla has usually a round shape and it looks like a big flat medallion where at the top you will find the rahka, known also as quark a fresh cheese made by warming soured milk until the desired amount of curdling is met, and then straining it. And here it's what me and Antti took! Mmm...it was so yummy!
So please if you happen to have a walk in Keskuspuisto, remember to go and treat yourself at the lovely Maunulan Maja. :)

Sono di nuovo qui pronta a scrivere un nuovo articolo sulla mia ultima visita in un luogo incantato in mezzo alla natura che il mio ragazzo mi ha fatto scoprire tempo fa... sto parlando di Maunulan Maja. Maunulan Maja si trova nel cuore di Keskuspuisto, precisamente a Metsäläntie 9 e questa sono io davanti alla grande casa rossa.
Come potete vedere dalla foto questa casa è molto grande ed è fatta interamente in legno, come un vero e proprio mökki (cottage) in stile finlandese in mezzo alla foresta e vi sentirete subito come essere stati catapultati in una fiaba. I jogger, gli sciatori, i nordic walker e le famiglie di solito si recano alla Maunulan Maja dopo una lunga passeggiata per gustare il kahvi ja pulla (caffè e un pasticcino) come vuole la tradizione finlandese, ma potete sempre trovare altre specialità salate. :P
Questo posto è senza dubbio un tesoro nascosto che merita una visita di tanto in tanto, ma consiglierei sinceramente di visitarlo in questo periodo un po' strano, visto che siamo ancora in lockdown e sapete perché? Come già saprete tutti i ristoranti e le caffetterie al momento sono chiusi o vendono solo cibo da asporto, ma nel caso di Maunulan Maja, avete ancora la possibilità di sedervi ai tavoli nell'area picnic, proprio di fronte al grande cottage rosso per godersi come si deve il mentre sei circondato da alberi e respiri un po 'd'aria fresca. Il Maunulan Maja è una di quelle caffetterie finlandesi molto tradizionali e vecchio stile proprio come piacciono a me e sono sempre felice di visitarla e assaggiare dei pasticcini appena sfornati e gustarli con del caffè o della cioccolata calda. Per fortuna sabato scorso il locale non era così affollato, e io e il mio ragazzo abbiamo preso due caffè con 2 gustose specialità: una salata e una dolce. La specialità salata era la Vorschmack piirakka. Non l'avevo mai provata prima d'ora e devo ammettere che era deliziosa. Di solito nei supermercati c'è la normale lihapiirakka, una specie di calzone fritto ripieno di carne macinata e riso, ma questa volta abbiamo trovato una variante speciale di questa pasta chiamata Vorschmack piirakka, che ricorda per la forma un'altra specialità tipica della Carelia chiamata lanttusupikka a base di rapa gialla. Il Vorschmack era il cibo preferito del Maresciallo Mannerheim ed è originario dei paesi dell'Europa orientale in cui vi sono diverse varianti. La ricetta finlandese include carne macinata, acciughe o aringhe e cipolle.
La specialità dolce che abbiamo scelto era una versione speciale rahkapulla con marmellata di mirtilli. Se sirte già dei lettori abituali di questo blog potreste ricordare che in un precedente articolo che ho già parlato della pulla (se no, date un'occhiata). Ma per rinfrescarvi la memoria in breve pulla è quel tipo di pane dolce aromatizzato con del cardamomo e sia nei supermercati, che nelle caffetterie che nei panifici ne potete trovare una vasta gamma. La rahkapulla ha solitamente una forma rotonda e si presenta come un grande medaglione piatto dove sulla sommità si trova il rahka, noto anche come quark, è un tipo di formaggio fresco prodotto dal lattevaccino pastorizzato. Ed ecco cosa abbiamo preso io e Antti! Mmm ... era tutto così buono! Gnam!
Quindi se vi capita di fare una passeggiata a Keskuspuisto, ricordatevi fare una capatina all'adorabile Maunulan Maja per concedervi un'invitantissima merenda. :)
P.s. A proposito mi sono dimenticata di dirvi che Maunulan Maja non è solo una semplice caffetteria, ma è molto di più... Infatti questo posto può essere preso in affitto sia per feste private che per dei meeting e inoltre c'è anche una sauna al suo interno che può essere presa in affitto.
